Weather
Phuket’s climate conditions are dominated by monsoon winds that blow year round. It is therefore always warm and humid. There are two distinct seasons, rainy and dry. The rainy season begins in May and end till October, during which the monsoon blows from the southwest. The dry season is from November through April, when the monsoon comes from the northeast. Highest average temperatures, at 33.4 degree Celsius, prevail during March. Lowest averages occur in January, when nightly lows dip to 22 degree Celsius.
Getting There
Tiger Airlines, one of Asia’s no-frills operators, has a daily morning flight between Singapore’s Changi Airport and Phuket using Airbus 320s with 180 seats in an all-economy configuration. Tickets can be bought on the Internet (http://www.tigerairways.com) or by phone. Budget carrier AirAsia (http://www.airasia.com) also offers service from Singapore.
Useful Language
Thai serves as the main language in Phuket and you are sure to be rewarded with a few extra smiles by the welcoming Thais if they catch a word or two of the language. While planning a holiday in Phuket make sure you learn a few essential Thai words and basic sentences since almost all the government activities are also carried out in this language. The people of Phuket take pride in their language and the main language is divided into a number of dialects which are used in their individual areas. English too is well understood, especially around the tourist areas of Phuket.
